Term 1 Complete

It feels like yesterday that the children returned to school ready for the start of the academic year back in September.  Eight weeks have since passed and Term 1 has come to a close.  It has been a fantastic term with so many highlights.  Our Local Governing Board spent the day in school on Monday and left very impressed with the children's attitude to learning and willingness to do their very best in every lesson.

Mr Fry spoke with the staff to pick out their highlights of Term 1.  The Reception team have been blown away by the way the children have settled into life at school.  The children are forming new friendships and adapting to the routines of school life.

The Year 1 team have been particularly impressed with how the children have approached Phase 5 phonics this term.  They have shown an appetite to learn the new graphemes and alternative pronunciations for sounds they already know.  They are also applying these sounds to their writing.

In year 2, attendance has been the key. The children have come into school ready and willing to learn. They are all demonstrating increased independence in the way they apply themselves to their learning.

Year 3 have also enjoyed a positive start to the school year.  Having moved upstairs into KS2, they are coming into school with a smile on their face and a willingness to learn.  They have particularly enjoyed their science enquiry this term. They have been carrying out experiments using torches into shadows and reflective materials.

In Year 4, punctuality and attendance have also been a real positive as the term has progressed.  The children have taken a real interest in developing their times-table knowledge and have enjoyed the TTRS showdowns between Maple and Oak.  The staff also mention the children's enthusiasm for their science enquiry as they have developed their skills as apprentice electricians when investigating circuits.

The Year 5 team talk about the way the children are settling into their new classes with children working together and forming new friendships.  This has been particularly evident when asked to work together as a team in PE, when peer editing in writing and when supporting each other with challenges in maths.

PGL is the stand-out experience in Year 6 with the children demonstrating remarkable independence and a willingness to try new things.  This has fed back into school with the children showing great determination to do their very best across all subjects.  They have grasped Year 6 by the horns and really gone for it with the way they all tackled long division successfully being one example of this.

In Resource Base, cherry have been  learning about Goldilocks and the 3 bears: including learning the makaton signs, Role playing the bears saying "who's been sleeping in my bed?!, making porridge, hearing the microwave "ping" and mixing" more" and "more" and arranging the furniture in the bears house.  The Year 1s are saying more words and joining in singing.  The children have been interested  seeing the new children coming in.  The new children come in happily and the staff have found ways to connect with each of them and feel they are very much part of the class.  It has been great to see Sycamore so engaged in their learning.  They have been very proud to share their writing and maths with Mr Fry and Mrs Taylor.  They have also really enjoyed taking part in the enrichment activities with their mainstream friends this term.

Thank you to all of our dedicated and hard-working staff who have made Term 1 such a success.  As a leadership team, we are very proud of them and the work they do day in day out for your children.  Term 2 promises to be even busier with plenty more exciting opportunities to engage the children.

Explorer Dome coming in Term 2

Thanks to a generous donation from the PTA, the Explorer Dome is heading to Blackhorse in Term 2.

On three days in November, a large inflatable tent will take centre stage in our school hall and welcome a class at a time inside.

Once inside, the children will experience an interactive light and sound show that covers all aspects of science.  The show will be selected to match the year groups' enquiry focus with shows ranging from the human body to space.

Our youngest children will be taken on a journey through winter to discover the magic of the winter season and how different people from around the world light up the dark times in December.

Parent Focus Group Meeting 1

Once again, this year we will be holding parent focus group meetings in school.  This is an opportunity for you to share your views and help shape strategic decisions that are made.

The theme for meeting one is attendance.  We are focussing on gaining an understanding of what works for different groups and what our next steps could be.

Views gathered in this meeting will help us form our Inclusion Strategy and identify strengths and next steps.  All parents are welcome.

The meeting is due to take place on Thursday 9th November at 9am in the staff room.  Refreshments will be available.

Attendance continues to improve

Thank you for your continued efforts in getting your children to school so far this year.  Attendance for the year so far is at 97.4%, which exceeds the target we set at the beginning of the year.  This makes a real difference to your children both academically and socially.

Elm top the charts with a very, very impressive 99.4%.  Four other classes: Willow, Beech, Sycamore and Chestnut all top 98%.  To have this many children with attendance above 98% is excellent.

Special mention also to Maple, Yew, Poplar, Lime, Ash and Rowan who exceed our target of 97%

This week's Champion

Pride is our value this week and Arthur in Elm is our Champion.

Miss Bettany writes; 'Arthur has had a fantastic first term in Elm Class, and I have been so impressed by the personal effort, bravery and pride he has shown every single day. He consistently strives to do the right thing, even when no one is watching, and it has been wonderful to see him showing such resilience when he finds things tricky. He has been coming into school so positively and approaching each day with bravery and a real willingness to try his best. Numerous adults have commented on how respectful he is and how much they have noticed the huge change in his attitude and effort. Arthur should be incredibly proud of himself, as his success this term has been a real pleasure to see!'

Good luck to Sarah O'Connor

Yesterday we said a fond farewell (for now) to Ash teacher Sarah O'Connor  who started her maternity leave.  Sarah has a few weeks before her second child is due.  She is planning to use the short time available to prepare for the arrival of a sibling for Finlay.  We wish Sarah, Kieran and Finlay the very best of luck as the next chapter in their family begins.
