Homework 02.10.20

Below you will find the tasks to complete at home this week. If you are struggling finding time or a quiet place, please speak to your teacher as soon as possible.

Remember, your reading records will be checked on Monday and everything else on Friday.

Pre-learning information

You might find some helpful tasks, activities or information that might help prepare you for your learning in the week ahead too. Have a look at what we are doing and the resources below.

Being a Writer (English)

Next week we are reminding ourselves all about modal verbs and adverbs for possibility from Year 5 and using them in our Year 6 writing. It might be good to look back over any work from lockdown, where you studied using these verbs and adverbs. Try watching and looking at these resources too!

Have a look at this 'Modal verbs' poster from our Year 6 Writer's Toolkit and try remembering some examples. We also have an 'Adverbs for Possibility' poster you might remember too.

The Alchemist's Letter

For the next few weeks, we will be working from the short film 'The Alchemist's Letter' which can be found here. We really suggest you watch it at home so you can see it clearly and think through the story. Enjoy the film!

  - What memories would you 'burn'? Why?
  - Why did the machine break?
  - What matters more than gold?

Being a Mathematician

We will be spending the beginning of the week multiplying 2 to 4 digit numbers by two-digit numbers, e.g. 236 x 34 before we multiply decimals by whole numbers.

It would be a good idea to practise some multiplying numbers together using a written strategy we used in Year 5.

If you click on this link to take you back to the Year 6 class page, you'll find under year group documents 'Multiplication Methods in Year 6' which shows you how we multiply at Blackhorse - turn to page 13 and 14.

Watching the very short explanation videos in the Year 6 video channel will also help prepare you for next week.

  • Multiplying four-digit numbers by a 2-digit number video
  • Multiplying decimal numbers by a whole number video
